Class of 2013 - Haley

I first met Haley through her mom. Mary was an aerobics instructor at the gym I joined when we moved to the Northwest and Haley would sometimes be "in tow". The next summer, we found that we both knew the godmother to Mary's children ... through baseball, of all things. Baseball brings people together.

I've shared Christmas parties and even vacations to Chelan with Haley! And she's always sweet, kind, and thoughtful.

You might could call her a "ray of sunshine"?

This ... may just be my favorite photo of her ... I love it, plain and simple.

Wouldn't you just die for "tresses" like those?! (Mary, don't you think she favors Lia so much in this profile shot?)

Haley, you are not only beautiful, but you are very fun to be around ... even if you have to (well, you know ... )

Wait, I changed my mind ... THIS is my favorite! Your eyes just pop!

But then, there's this one ... I think it's probably not really fair for someone to have eyes like yours while the rest of us have eyes like ours. :/

Oh Haley ... I can't believe I've known you for more than 11 years. It's been a joy watching you grow up. I sure hope your senior year is all that you want it to be and that you graduate with much hope for your tomorrows.

Class of 2013—Kendra

It was rather short time after Bailey and Ryan's mom contacted me about their senior photos that Kendra's mom called. Their yearbook photo submission deadline was approaching fast and they were worried about meeting it with photos that they loved.

Normally, I try not to work on Sundays (except to get ready for my next week), but I agreed to meet Kendra early on a Sunday morning and she was strict on time because she had a soccer game that afternoon. We started out with one of my favorite brick walls that totally complemented the blue of her shirt and eyes.

The old clock on First Street in Snohomish is one of my favorite "props" and I was happy that it was a sleepy Sunday morning so we could shoot the full street.

I usually shoot in the late afternoon, but I totally loved playing with morning sunshine and creating a bit of halo with Kendra's hair.

Kendra, I hope you have a fabulous senior year and I wish you all the best in your post high school years. My camera loved you!

Bailey & Ryan

The time I spent shooting Bailey's and Ryan's senior photos was wonderfully refreshing. They are step-siblings with all the love and good-natured ribbing of a biological brother-sister duo.

They both are seniors this year ... what a wild ride for those parents, huh?! ... so we got both sets of photos done at one time on First Street in Snohomish.  

Apparently, this hat is just one shake shy of being a permanent fixture on Ryan's head and I loved that he wanted to wear it in some of the photos!

And not to be outdone, Bailey brought her hat along ... it's awesome with this colorful bench and really brings out Bailey's personality.

I don't think I got one bad shot of Bailey ... her eyes and skin ensured that. She's just a doll.

Bailey and Ryan enjoy the tea shop in town so, of course, shots in front of it were a "must".

I love when kids bring a few props along and for Drummer Bailey, drumsticks are required!

Besides the hat, Ryan didn't need props. He just used his mad parkour skills to scale walls and end up in crazy places that no one else could possibly get to without breaking something.

Of course, we had to get some serious shots, too ...

All in all, this shoot was about fun and laughter. Thanks, Bailey and Ryan, for letting me be a part of your senior year.

Class of 2013—Stephan

Stephan is a guy who is true to his word. He has told me for at least two years that he would have me do his senior photos so when the phone rang requesting open dates, I wasn't surprised.

Stephan is also a workhorse of a student and leader. I coordinate all the special events for our high school and Stephan is usually right there asking what he can do to help me. He always has a pleasant smile on his face and this photo is the only one from our shoot that is serious. Every time he tried to be serious, we both ended up in fits of laughter.

Dad and Mom were along for the shoot, too ... Dad got put to work!

Stephan, thanks for allowing me to document your senior year in these portraits.

I know you're excited to experience this year and I wish you all the best in your next endeavors.

Senior Portraits — Bre

There are some people you like immediately upon meeting. There are some that you love seeing through the lens of your camera. And there are some that are both.

Bre is one of those people. Easy to like ... easy to photograph. She is graduating in just a couple of weeks, and although she had her photos done elsewhere, she wasn't happy with them. She enlisted me to redeem those shots and hold this moment in her life in photographic memory.

We started off in front of a fabulously painted building and someone who worked there came to ask why people loved taking photos there. I responded with, "Well, just look at those colors!"

We found great color every where we went actually.

And natural color ... what's to complain about?!

A personal favorite for me is finding architectural elements to incorporate into photos. This wrought iron fence made us both happy. :)

We saw this wonderful yellow wicker chair in front of a shop. I said, "This would be wonderful as a prop in front of that turquoise door down the street!" Bre is probably more daring than I and we ventured into the shop to ask the owner if we could borrow it. After a bit of sweet talk, he agreed. I looked at the price tag later and realized why he was hesitant ... it was a $198 vintage wicker chair!

We were also lucky enough to find a bit of brick wall ... Love it!

The bookshop is a new treasure for me. The front windows are simply wonderful and the owner couldn't have been more accommodating. She allowed us to take photos to our heart's content.

This just might be my favorite ...

Natural Light Headshots

I don't get hired to take headshots very often because I advertise that I shoot on-location using natural lighting. Many people have the preconceived notion that the lack of studio backdrops and lighting precludes getting good headshots and they envision a totally different look of photo from the classic headshot.

However, with a few adjustments, a studio-style portrait is possible ...

The backdrop in these photos is a white tablecloth held by two people. Seriously high-tech. The photos were taken on a patio at the high school on a cloudy day and the lighting is completely natural, using a reflector on the subject's right side.

If you know how to find the light and use it, you'll snag a great shot every time.

Of course, there has to be a couple of outtakes, right?

School Photos for Tanner

Oh dear! Mom forgot to buy my school photos! What ever shall we do?!

Let's call Tammy! I showed up with my camera in hand to capture all the energy this nine-year-old has in him ...

Tanner is one of my favorite little guys. Not only is he the son of a dear friend of mine, but he embodies everything "boy". He and I were talking about his cousin having gone hunting and he very proudly said, "Yeah, he got an 8-pointer!"

He also has a sweet side to him and if you can't see it in this photo, you just don't know how to look at kids through their eyes.



Tanner, I love your dark eyes, your freckles, and that darling grin of yours! Stay sweet and tough!!

 

If you want something a little different than the standard school photos, consider this option. There's no reason why seniors in high school should have all the great photos, right?!

Senior Shoot: Chris

The air was cool, but the sun was bright. The leaves were turning, some had already fallen, and we really couldn't have asked for a more beautiful Autumn afternoon.

I hadn't met Chris or his mom yet, but when I saw a young man in a football jersey accompanied by a woman carrying a bag of clothes, I suspected it was them.

After I realized his jersey was from a rival high school, I almost packed up and went home, but I forced myself to continue the shoot. (Just kidding, of course, Chris!)

With a smile like this, I couldn't hold the rivalry against him, could I?!

Although Chris has a serious side to him, which incidentally makes for incredibly moody photos ...

... he also knows how to be a little silly. I wanted to take a couple of shots of him and his mom so I asked him if he would lean over and kiss her on the cheek. He did ... full-blown raspberries! I'm sure she had flashbacks to all the raspberry kisses he ever gave her as a baby and toddler! Soon, they were both in fits of giggles.

As we watch these kids walking away from us into their own lives, we tend towards a bit of sentamentality. It's only natural. However, we wish them all the best and great success in their futures.

Sunset Senior Shots

Today was a beautiful fall day in the Pacific Northwest. I shot a senior portrait session today on the waterfront ...

I'd say sunsets are pretty phenomenal in Washington State, wouldn't you?

Hope - Class of 2012

When Andrew's mom called to schedule his senior photos with me, I was thrilled. Not only do I supremely enjoy senior photo sessions, but I really like Andrew and his outlook on life.

He is a bright, effervescent young man who knows where he is headed in life. He is just as comfortable holding a conversation with me as he is hanging out with his friends. He is truly a great boy with an infectious smile.

Tomorrow, though ... Andrew will be a man, leading his life, his family, and his community. He graduates high school this year and he is a wonderful representative of our next generation.

If we have to depend on the next generation for leadership, I don't mind thinking that Andrew will be a part of that. What a fabulous job his parents performed in raising a wonderful human being.
