As a friend on Facebook reminded me this morning, we don't need Valentine's Day to celebrate "love" any more than we need Thanksgiving Day to celebrate gratitude, Mother's Day to celebrate motherhood, or Christmas to celebrate Christ's birth. All holidays are overcommercialized and we mere mortals can't do much about that so why not enjoy the day as it is?
It's nice to know that Ken won't spend our hard-earned money on exorbitantly-priced roses today, that he'll never bring me cheap chocolates, and that he'll never make restaurant reservations for February 14th. It's nice to know that we'll stay in tonight and experiment with a couple of new recipes from the Piemonte region of Italy, sample some "family" wine, and that we'll both feel that we hit the jackpot with the evening.
I hope you'll find a pleasant way to celebrate love today ... everyone needs a bit of love, right?!
