Monday takes a bad rap for being a negative thing when, really, all Monday is ... is a day. It's another day of the week, but we tend to blame it for anything that goes wrong on that day. My southern self wants to say, "bless its heart".
"Well, it IS Monday!"
"My goodness ... what a MONDAY I've had!"
"It had to happen ... today's MONDAY!"
"Of COURSE it's raining ... it's MONDAY!"
Like any of that is "MONDAY'S" fault?
Why do we do that? I tend to think that maybe it's because it is easier to pass the blame of our lack of gratitude to someone, or in this case, an innocent day of the week than it is to admit that we are not grateful.
- We are not grateful for the nice couple of days off of work we just had.
- We are not grateful that we have a job to return to that pays the bills and maybe, if we're fortunate, one that we enjoy.
- We are not grateful for the ebb and flow of days and routines that define our existence.
Playing Devil's Advocate, I will admit that getting back into a week's routine after a nice weekend is hard to do. Especially if the weather was fabulous or if you just got back from a trip. It would be so much easier to sleep in again, cozy under the covers. Or how fabulous would it be to have a leisurely Monday morning walk with a friend? Or spend Monday morning reading a good book?
Think about this ... the next time you find yourself griping about "having" to go to work, or bemoaning the fact that your weekend is over, think about those who have no job, therefore couldn't enjoy their weekend nearly as much as you did because they are short on cash. They would've loved to have gone to the movies Friday night and brunch on Sunday. They would love to have ordered tickets for a trip to Disney with the kids when school gets out. They would LOVE to see a Monday morning come as long as they had a job to go to!
Perhaps "Blue Monday" could become "Blessed Monday". What do ya think? Maybe Monday morning's first exercise could be to count your blessings.
A few years ago, I started a little competition with one of my sisters-in-law to see if I could wish her a "Happy Monday!" by text before "the day she hated most out of the seven" got the best of her. Now it's more of a mutual competition and she often wins.
Who could you spread gratitude and blessings to today? Send them a text or email, make a positive Facebook post, write a blog post commemorating Monday rather than cursing it ... Be different! Turn the tables and spread the Monday Love!
Monday is only a day of the week. YOU are a fully-functioning human being with all the power of making your own choices. Which one will you make today?
