Alright ... let's talk turkey. Thanksgiving Day is Thursday and around our house, it's one of our favorite days. It's time off work, it's puzzle-making time, it's football, it's gratitude, it's sharing ... and it's FOOD!
Here's our menu ...
Appetizers: cheese tray, salame, pickles, olives, bread, maybe tapenade? or something else? ....
Main Meal: Roast turkey, cornbread dressing, mashed potatoes, Grandma's carrots, sweet potato casserole (hold the marshmallows!), pancetta green beans, Mario's Brussels sprouts, cranberries (Aly loves the canned jellied kind!), gravy, Waldorf Salad, Watergate Salad, homemade potato rolls ...
Desserts: Pecan Pie, Pumpkin Pie, Apple Pie ...with fresh whipped cream and vanilla ice cream.
Beverages: lots of iced tea, sparkling cider, and wine. And coffee, of course.
Every year, as I'm checking out with all the ingredients at the grocery store, the clerk asks "Are you hosting the meal?" My answer is always, "Yes." Our extended families don't live close enough for a short trip home so we put on all the fixin's chez nous. I love the traditional foods, cooking together, and the relaxed way this very special meal comes together. As my Em says, "Keep the timer. Ditch the clock."
Here are a few of our recipes ... if I get a chance, I'll come back and upload some more for you!
